How this zakat calculator works

Zakat is 2.5% (one fortieth) of the wealth you have held for a full Islamic lunar year (hawl), once that wealth is at or above the nisab. Nisab comes from the hadith of 20 mithqal of gold or 200 dirhams of silver.

  • Pakistan weights: 87.48 g (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 g (52.5 tola) of silver, as used by The Citizens Foundation. When your wealth is a mix of cash, gold and silver, many Hanafi scholars use the lower silver nisab.
  • UAE weights: the UAE Fatwa Council sets nisab at 85 g of pure 24K gold and 595 g of pure silver, and values cash and trade goods against 85 g of gold (Emarat Al Youm report of the Council's statement, April 2024).
  • Gold is valued by its purity: 22K counts as 22/24 of the 24K price.
  • Debts due now are subtracted. Long-term loans such as a full mortgage are treated differently by different scholars.
  • Your home, car, furniture and personal tools are not counted.

Gulf zakat offices also publish guidance: ZATCA (Saudi Arabia) and the UAE General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat. In Pakistan, banks deduct zakat on some savings accounts on the first of Ramadan, unless you have filed a declaration.
